A Mallard Morning

There's nothing like walking through the woods with your puppies on a crisp morning just as the sun creeps into your hollow,

the woods around you alive with birdsong announcing Spring's imminent arrival,

giving thanks for the glorious morning just as it is

and then

 having it get even better...

I was fiddling with my glove when this Mallard couple first flew over.

They took me by surprise and it was a few seconds before I remembered I had my camera, worked my glove back on and snapped the shot above.

I was sighing, sure the photo would be a blur but grateful for the mere sight of them.

(It turned out much better than I expected!)

Then, guess what?

They came back, making a couple of wide circles before finally disappearing.

Alas, all I had with me was my 50mm lens, not my 70-300,
so I've cropped these quite a lot and the resolution is pretty bad.

This is how far they really were away from me.

I hope they were scoping out the neighborhood and found a place they like!

  2. Having always seen Mallards just wading around, I never really thought of them flying high in the sky!

  3. Wasn't that so nice of them to give you another flyby? Lovely, colourful captures, Barbara.

  4. We have a pair that are usually on our pond every year. They have been back for the last week or so. Visiting my birdfeeder multiple times throughout the day.

  5. I so glad you captured the memory, Barbara. Sometimes that's the best part and even an imperfect picture brings back a splendid memory. Thanks for sharing in Walk and Click Wednesday!!

  6. Great capture with your 50mm lens! It's frustrating to have the wrong lens at a moment like that, but you recovered nicely. They are beautiful!

  8. I starting to have a fondness for big sky /small bird shots. They give a feeling of space and flight (I think)

Cheers and thinks for linking to WBW

  9. this is why i keep my resolution set on the highest level so when i have a smaller lens on i can crop later ... those are quite good for a 50mm

  10. They're beautiful. Gives a perspective of how far away they were. When I'm outdoors with my camera I keep the 100-400 lens on 100% of the time. It never fails that I'll need it.
